What is an IBCLC

What is an IBCLC?

An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant denotes the highest certification and level of education one can achieve in breastfeeding education. An IBCLC is defined by the certifying organizations in the following way:

As a clinical expert in the management of breastfeeding and human lactation, the IBCLC is trained to counsel mothers and families on initiation, exclusivity, and duration of breastfeeding, and to assist amidst any difficulties or high-risk situations. IBCLCs are sensitive to and support the needs of mothers, infants, children, and various family structures in working toward breastfeeding goals.

The IBCLC is a vital member of the healthcare team, collaborating with all healthcare professionals involved in the well being of moms and babies. As an IBCLC I am an advocate for women, children and families.
